Yuasa Sealed Lead Acid Batteries or Shorai Lithium Performance Batteries – Which is Right for You?     

If you have previously shopped for a replacement motorcycle battery, especially via our site, you may have noticed that when choosing a Yuasa battery there will often be one or more Shorai batteries shown at the bottom of the listing page marked as “compatible” or “alternative”. What is the difference between these two types of battery and which would be the right one for you?

Yuasa Maintenance Free Lead Acid Batteries  ​

Yuasa are the world’s leading supplier of SLA (sealed, lead acid) motorcycle batteries. As the preferred brand of multiple manufacturers these are by far the most likely battery to have been fitted during manufacture. Yuasa incorporate special plate technology to increase shelf life and retain increased capacity in a robust, maintenance free battery package. Sealed and vented lead acid batteries are the traditional solution for motorcycles and are proven to provide power, stability and to have a low drain rate over time.

Shorai Lithium Performance Batteries

Shorai are a premium, racing brand, designed to reduce the size and weight of traditional battery packs as well as using lithium as opposed to lead for a much lighter overall unit. Extremely popular on the racing circuit for their power starts and impressive weight savings, Shorai batteries save an average of 2.75kg on weight compared to their Yuasa equivalents. For larger batteries the weight difference can be over 4kg.

Shorai batteries use lithium rather than lead to produce a lightweight, high-performance battery with higher initial CCA (cold cranking amps). Shorai batteries are recommended for high speed racing bikes or other applications where weight is at a premium and a lighter battery is preferred. Both brands supply high quality, reliable products, recommended by manufacturers and racers alike. If quality, reliability and proven performance are your most important considerations we would suggest looking at a Yuasa battery. Alternatively, if you are looking for an ultra-lightweight solution to increase speed and performance the Shorai may be more suitable for you.
